One Thing You Can Do to Make Electricity Cost Less & Do More

New Orleans residents will soon have the opportunity to set a new direction for energy that lowers electric bills, creates jobs, and avoids the pollution that harms our neighborhoods and warms our planet. On April 29 at 10:00 am, City Councilmembers will hold a public meeting on a draft renewable portfolio standard or RPS. Below is a rundown on the Council’s draft RPS – the good, the bad, and the ugly – and one thing you can do before the Council utility committee meets.

The costs that we are paying for using dirty energy are too high. The Energy Future New Orleans (EFNO) coalition has submitted a proposal to the New Orleans City Council aimed at transforming the current energy system in the city to 100% renewable energy by 2040. Add your name to the petition and urge the city of New Orleans to take bold action.

Tell your Friends and Family

Everyone uses energy and every home and business pays for it! This means if you live in New Orleans, you might just care about where it comes from and how much it costs. We also live on the very frontlines of climate change, and have every reason to take action to mitigate the worst effects of climate change AND to respond to the realities of a warmer planet. Conversations with your neighbors,  co-workers, and family about how New Orleans is preparing is a part of the solution. Let them know about this website!

Community Engagement - Conversations with Councilmembers

Join Audubon Louisiana and the Energy Future New Orleans Coalition for a low-key community event to talk about renewable energy with your City Councilmember!

The costs, both monetarily and environmentally, that we are paying to use dirty power are too high. Right now, some New Orleans Entergy customers pay as much as 23% of their income on energy bills. Further, the reliance on dirty fossil fuels to produce this energy is contributing to climate change, which is expected to exacerbate these costs as extreme weather events push temperatures higher.

That's why the Energy Future New Orleans Coalition is asking City Council to support a strong Renewable Portfolio Standard. By committing to 100% renewable energy by 2040, New Orleans can bring jobs and investment into the communities where they're most needed, improve the resiliency and equity of local power, and protect New Orleans from the worst impacts of a changing climate.

Community voices have been key in the creation and promotion of EFNO’s Resilient-Renewable Portfolio standard. As we get closer to the council’s vote on the RPS docket, it’s all the more important to lift those voices in ways and spaces where they’ll be heard by those who need to hear them-- our elected representatives. This event is an opportunity both to listen and to speak up.

Join us for a short presentation on the R-RPS followed by Q&A and opportunities to make your voice heard!
